Ian Johannessen, managing director of Peoplesafe, said: “Transport workers are often on their own for long periods of time and that can make them vulnerable if employers do not take their responsibilities seriously.
“Out of sight does not mean out of mind. Employers have a duty of care to employees, wherever they are.”
It is estimated that 6.8 million people spend all or part of their working day alone. They include lorry and delivery drivers, social workers, shop assistants and farm workers.
The Microlise Conference is on May 20 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Speakers include Richard Burnett, chief executive of the Road Haulage Association; Caroline Hicks, of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, and David Wells, of the Freight Transport Association.
